The very first Bandsman of the Year (originally called the Pet Bandsman of the Year) is Dr. Al Walker. His award is in recognition of his valiant effort in the massed bands at the Montreal Games to hold up his kilt with one hand while continuing to play with his other. The prize is a handmade set of suspenders crafted from baler twine.
